Guidelines Internship

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics offers internship opportunities to particularly talented undergraduate and MSc students of numerical mathematics and computational science and engineering.

Prerequisites:

• Outstanding academic performance documented by top grades
• Subject of study which has a clear focus on either applied mathematics or computational science and engineering.
  (Students of traditional engineering subjects need not apply)
• Solid knowledge in mathematics and computational methods
• Experience with the implementation of numerical algorithms
• Brief letter of recommendation by an established research scientist, preferably a faculty member of the candidates home institution.

The application must include (as PDF documents):

• A one page CV
• Complete academic records (grades)
• A survey of the candidates' education in numerical methods and programming skills
• A statement about which fields of research at the SAM are of particular interest to the candidate.

Conditons of internship:

• Duration: 8 weeks (minimum) - 16 weeks (maximum)
• Payment: CHF 2000/month to cover expenses
• Health insurance
• Travel costs will usually not be reimbursed
• The candidate is expected to arrange accommodation in Zuerich by himself prior to coming.

After you have been ACCEPTED as an INTERNSHIP at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics, following documents have to be submitted:

1. Proof of accommodation in Zurich for the period of internship (letter of the landlord/host with complete contact information)
2. Confirmation letter from your university stating that the internship is an integrated part of your study and that it is compulsory (only for Non EU/EFTA citizens).
3. Letter from your university certifying that your are enrolled as a student.

5. Copy of your passport

It will take up to 3 months to get an entry permit from the Swiss authorities. Only after receipt of the entry permit, you will be able to apply for a visa at the Swiss Embassy in your country.
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is most important to provide the confirmations mentioned under point 2 and 3, which are absolutely indispensable for granting an entry permit.
