are available starting November 1, 2008 or any time thereafter

for research projects in the following areas in
applied and computational mathematics with focus on

applied and computational harmonic and stochastic analysis.

1. Applied Mathematics/Numerical Analysis:

1.1
Numerical Analysis of Multiresolution [Wavelet]
Finite Element Methods for
high-dimensional transport equations

Prerequisites:
Master Degree in Mathematics with excellent grades
and emphasis in analysis and/or numerical analysis of
multilevel/ multiresolution methods for the
numerical solution of partial differential equations.

1.2
Analysis of space-time adaptive Multiresolution
Finite Element Approximations of singularity
formation in nonlinear partial differential equations

Prerequisites:
Master Degree in Mathematics with outstanding grades
and emphasis in analysis and/or numerical analysis of
nonlinear partial differential equations.

1.3
Analysis of deterministic Finite Element Methods
for
Stochastic Partial Differential Equations

Prerequisites:
Master Degree in Mathematics with outstanding grades
and emphasis in analysis, probability and numerical analysis;
in particular: probability theory, stochastic processes and
Partial Differential Equations.

2. Computational Science and Engineering:

Multiresolution [Wavelet] Discretizations of Transport Equations

Prerequisites: Master Degree in Applied Mathematics, in Physics or
in Computational Science and Engineering with outstanding grades
and strong Scientific Computing Component.
Successful candidates will have good mathematics background and
excellent MATLAB and C programming skills.

The positions are full-time positions with 100% employment.
They carry the responsibility to assist in teaching computational
mathematics courses at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics;
Postdoctoral Fellows will be able to hold seminars and special
topics courses.
All positions are for an initial period of 3 years, renewable.
The projects are funded in part by the Swiss National Science
Foundation and related in part to the
Priority Research Programme SPP1324 of German Research Foundation
(see www.dfg-spp1324.de for details).
