D-MATH Broschüre
Mathematik, das geistige Auge
german only (PDF, 1.45 MB)
The Mathematics Department (D-MATH) is responsible for Mathematics instruction in all programs of study at the ETHZ. For students concentrating in Mathematics, the Department offers a rich and carefully coordinated program of courses and seminars in a broad range of fields of pure and applied mathematics. The curriculum is designed to acquaint students with fundamental mathematical concepts and structures, and to give them enough practice in working with these ideas so that they can apply them independently in new situations.
It is a particularity of the ETHZ that the connection between Mathematics and Physics is closer here than in most other universities. This close connection derives from a long tradition and from the convictioin that these two fields continue to influence each other strongly. The Mathematics and Physics Departments are jointly responsible for three diploma programs: Mathematics, Physics, and Computational Science and Engineering. The diploma programs in Mathematics and Physics focus on developing specialized competence in the respective disciplines. Complementing this emphasis, the third diploma program in Computational Science and Engineering offers an education in natural and engineering sciences emphasizing interdisciplinarity and application and problem orientation and which includes the use of the computer as an essential component. These programs of study are carefully coordinated at all levels to make changes in career direction possible.
An optional supplementary program makes it possible to qualify for the Didaktischen Ausweis in Mathematics or Physics.
